Instructions

  1. 1

    1. Make the cranberry syrup

In a small saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook 8–10 minutes, crushing the berries against the side of the pot until they burst and the syrup turns deep red. Strain through a fine mesh sieve, pressing on the solids; let the syrup cool. (Makes enough for 4–5 drinks; keeps a week in the fridge.)

  2. 2

    2. Muddle the rosemary and cranberries

In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle 1 sprig of rosemary with 3–4 fresh cranberries to release their oils and juice. Don't pulverize — a few presses is enough.

  3. 3

    3. Shake with ice

Add the bourbon, 1 oz of the cooled cranberry syrup, the lemon juice, and orange juice to the shaker. Fill with ice and shake hard for 12–15 seconds until well chilled.

  4. 4

    4. Double-strain and serve

Fine-strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice (double-straining removes the muddled bits for a clean look). Garnish with an orange twist, a few fresh cranberries, and a slap of rosemary between your palms to release its oils. Serve immediately.

Chef's notes

  • ★Batch the cranberry syrup up to a week ahead — it's also excellent in sparkling water or over vanilla ice cream.
  • ★For a lighter, less sweet drink, reduce the cranberry syrup to 3/4 oz.
  • ★No bourbon? Applejack or aged rum make excellent substitutes with a similar warmth.
