How to Set a Thanksgiving Table: The Basics

Setting a Thanksgiving table is less about rules than about layers — a foundation, a centerpiece, and the details at each place — that add up to a table that looks like the holiday. Here's how to set a Thanksgiving table, from the base to the place card.
Start With a Foundation
Begin with a Thanksgiving tablecloth or a runner over a bare or polished table. A linen-toned cloth softens the table; a burlap or woven runner adds texture. Layer the two — a cloth under a runner — for depth. The foundation is what the rest of the table is built on, so pick something you can add to without crowding.
Build a Low Centerpiece
A Thanksgiving centerpiece should anchor the table without blocking the view. Group pillar candles of varying heights down the center and tuck in mini pumpkins, gourds, dried wheat, eucalyptus, or pomegranates. Keep it low enough to see over — a guest shouldn't have to peer around the flowers to talk to the person across the table.
Set the Places
Stack each place with a charger, a dinner plate, and a napkin folded or tied with twine. Add printable Thanksgiving place cards with each guest's name and a small touch — a sprig of rosemary, a mini gourd, a wrapped candy. Lay the silverware and glassware simply. A table set this way feels like Thanksgiving without feeling stiff.
